Recommendation: Highest
The First Shop of Coffee Prince is a Korean drama that I had heard about long before I ever watched it due to apathy on the subject. It first aired on July 2, 2007 until August 28, 2007. The story starts out with tomboyish looking Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun-Hy) who works hard in order to provide for her younger sister and mother. She meets Choi Han Kyul (Gong Yoo) who is a wealthy heir to a foods corporation when she is working one day. He mistakes her for a male and after certain circumstances, he offers to hire her as a fake “lover” so he would no longer be bothered by the females that his Grandmother sets him up with. Go Eun Chan, in need of money, accepts the offer.
Meanwhile, Choi Han Kyul’s Grandmother makes a bet with him and basically dares him to open and run a coffee shop and have it succeed. Choi Han Kyul decides to do this and only wants to hire good-looking men for the coffee shop so female patrons will be attracted to the place. Go Eun Chan, in need of the money, begs Choi Han Kyul to hire her (as he still thinks that she is a boy) and she begins to work at the coffee shop while deliberately hiding her gender this time. Meanwhile, she and Choi Han Kyul, who has never caught on that Go Eun Chan is a female, start to develop feelings for each other.
This drama is one that I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes the romance and comedy genres. Unlike some dramas, which seem to drag on for an eternity, Coffee Prince is engaging until the end. This has my vote of approval.
